How can you find a house that will grow with you and your family?


House hunting for a family is an entirely new ballpark from shopping for your first home.


Instead of mainly being constricted by your budget, you now have to consider the house size, location, neighborhood, school districts….the list goes on and on.


One major concern for most home buyers is finding a home you won’t grow out of in a few years.


Whether you’re having a baby, getting a dog, or your kids are simply getting older, you need to find a house that’s accommodating for all of life’s changes.


Besides the number of bedrooms and square footage, there are many features to look for in a house to make sure it’ll grow with your family. Here are three things we think you should look for when house hunting with a family:


Unfinished Rooms


Many buyers see unfinished spaces as a big turn-off. We disagree. While completely renovating any space may seem daunting, it gives you complete freedom and control over the space you create.


An unfinished basement could become the master suite of your dreams, an office, or a home theater for your entire family to enjoy. An attic could become a spare bedroom or a playroom for your kids. The possibilities are endless, but having that unfinished room will allow you to tailor the space to whatever your needs are.


Lots (and lots) of Storage


Never underestimate the power of built-in storage. While you may not have a ton of stuff now, the storage space will definitely come in handy in a few years. “The number one complaint I hear from growing families, ‘We need a new place, we have no room for this baby stuff!’” says Realtor® Kari Moseman.

Look at the current storage and storage potential when looking at a new house. Are there walk-in closets? Or closets in the hallway? Is there a mud room? Or built-in shelves in the living room? These features may not be a priority on your wish list, but they’ll make a big difference in the long run.


Exterior Space


The space your new house provides outside of the actual house should be a major factor, too. If a house has a garage, this can potentially double the amount of storage space a house has. Simply having a garage is no longer a benefit of a house. You need to look for a garage that has built-in shelves, extra side space, or maybe even built for one more car than what you own. When you need somewhere to put your Christmas decorations, or when your kids grow up and get a car of their own, you’ll be thankful for the extra space.


Another important factor to consider is the yard space. While it may be tempting to buy a house with a smaller yard to avoid maintenance, a bigger yard will most likely benefit you more in the long run. Your kids will love the extra space to play, especially if you want to get a playground or trampoline down the road. A larger yard will be accommodating if you decide to get a dog at some point. Also, backyards are great spaces to host get-togethers, whether it is a birthday, family, or graduation party.

Your needs now and your needs in a few years will be drastically different, so make sure you purchase a home that will grow with your family.
